There is still no certainty about what caused the injury to a Vancouver Island woman earlier this month when she lost small pieces of two fingers while surfing off Tofino.

At first, the woman, Kaitlin Dakers, 23, thought the tether line connecting her to the surfboard must have snapped hard across her hand as she fell in the waves — until a doctor said that the wound looked more like a bite.

If it was a bite, and if a shark was the culprit, it would be the first-ever such attack recorded in Canadian waters.

But as the CBC’s Alan Waterman reports, experts are casting more doubt on that theory.
