No injuries have been reported and no homes were threatened by flooding that closed a local highway in both directions for hours just outside the city of Castlegar, in southeastern B.C.
Three homes in Thrums, just east of Castlegar, were evacuated as a precaution.
The area was deluged with rain earlier Tuesday. As much as 50 millimetres fell in one hour, CBC meteorologist Claire Martin said.
Local reports had said Highway 3A had been closed by a mudslide, but RCMP Staff Sgt. Dan Seibel told CBC News that in fact, the road had become awash in muddy water and no mudslides had occurred.
The torrential downpour swelled creeks within the city, which is about 100 kilometres southeast of the scene of last week’s deadly landslide in Johnsons Landing.
The B.C. government agency DriveBC said Highway 3A to Nelson was reopened about 7:15 p.m. PT.
