Conservation officers say they’ve had dozens of calls about bear sightings already on Vancouver’s North Shore as the animals wake up after their winter hibernation and begin a hunt for food.

More than 500 bears were put down last year because they were a danger or had become too habituated to residential neighbourhoods.

As the CBC’s Meera Bains reports, provincial and local authorities are stepping up their efforts to make sure people aren't carelessly attracting the animals into human settlements.
