A skier has become the third victim of B.C. backcountry avalanches in a week after being caught in snowslide near Revelstoke on Sunday afternoon.

The man, who has not been named, was skiing with friends in the Ghost Peak area southeast of Revelstoke when the avalanche hit, burying him instantly.

The man's friends were able to locate him using a beacon search and managed to dig him out, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene by Revelstoke Search and Rescue.

Due to deteriorating weather conditions, rescue services have not yet been able to remove the victim or rescue his friends. Further attempts Monday morning to attend the scene were hampered by high winds.

The death was the third in a series of avalanche fatalities in the B.C. backcountry last week.

On Tuesday a 44-year-old Squamish man died when he was caught in an avalanche while snowmobiling near his home.

A 33-year-old Alberta male snowmobiler was the victim of an avalanche on Friday in Corbin near Sparwood in southeast B.C.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre warned Monday that high avalanche danger would remain for at least the next three days.

The centre is advising against travel in the Columbia Mountains, the south Rockies and the mountains along the South Coast.
