Sex crimes investigators in Vancouver are going over unsolved cases to see if a U.S. fugitive arrested in Montreal may have committed any crimes here.
Steven Dyer was arrested at Montreal's Trudeau airport on Tuesday after returning to Canada on a flight from Venezuela.
Steven Dyer has been on the run since 2002. (Courtesy of the Scottsdale Police Department)Dyer had been featured a number of times on the U.S. television program America's Most Wanted.
He had been convicted in absentia in Arizona for molesting two boys between 1999 and 2001, but despite the media attention, he managed to evade police for almost a decade.
Vancouver police had been unaware until this week that Dyer had been living in various places in the Lower Mainland, from Vancouver to Chilliwack, said Const. Lindsey Houghton.
“There is no information to suggest he was involved in any unsolved criminal offences. But our investigators will be reviewing any unsolved files,” Houghton said.
Canada Border Services Agency says Dyer had assumed a fake identity.
"We are uncertain of when Steven Dyer entered Canada because there is no record of him entering,” said CBSA spokeswoman Cindy Lepur. “But what I can tell you is he assumed a Canadian identity fraudulently in 2004.”
Dyer remains in police custody in Montreal.
