A gas leak in downtown Victoria has been shut down by Fortis B.C. early Tuesday morning and traffic was returning to normal in the area by 7 a.m. PT.

Officials say it appears a meter behind the Jewish Synagogue on Blanshard Street near Pandora Street had been tampered with. The area was shut down to traffic, but has since been reopened.

Officials say there is no threat to the public but Victoria police are investigating how the line was tampered with and who may have been responsible.
