Fortis BC is seeking a single gas rate for B.C. customers. (CBC)Fortis BC wants to give some customers a break on their natural gas bills, but the move could also mean higher costs for others.
Spokeswoman Kirsten Walker says currently customers are billed under three different rate structures in B.C., depending on where they live, so the gas company has submitted an application to the B.C. Utilities Commission to introduce a single gas rate across the province by 2014
"For example on Vancouver island, the Sunshine Coast, and Whistler our customers can expect to see about a 26 to 37 per cent rate decrease. And this is because they are currently paying rates that are much higher than the rest of the province," said Walker.
But under that plan, the rest of B.C. would be hit with a 4.5 per cent increase in natural gas rates.
Fortis B.C. is a privately operated gas and energy company, owned and run by Newfoundland-based Fortis Inc., but its rates are controlled by the B.C. Utilities Commission.
