Former Vancouver mayor Tom Campbell has died at the age of 85.
Known as "Tom Terrific," Campbell first joined city council in 1962 and was elected mayor in 1966, serving three terms until 1972.
During his time in office, Campbell oversaw the acquisition of the south shore of False Creek in 1969 and the development of many city landmarks — including the H.R. MacMillan Planetarium.
But Campbell was also well known for his opposition to Vancouver's burgeoning hippie culture, and directing the controversial police operations which resulted in the Gastown Riots of 1971.
In a press release, current mayor Gregor Robertson said Campbell will be remembered for his dedication to public service and lasting legacy to the City of Vancouver.
