The two recent deaths of Canadians in Mexico has many B.C. residents rethinking travel to that country.

The body of Ximena Osegueda, a Canadian citizen and graduate student in Hispanic studies at UBC, was found by her ex-husband last month near a Huatulco beach.

On Jan. 3, Salt Spring Island resident Robin Wood was killed during a robbery at the holiday home of a fellow Canadian in Melaque, a town popular among Canadian snowbirds.

The Canadian government has issued a warning to those travelling to Mexico, warning Canadians to exercise a high degree of caution "due to a deteriorating security situation in many parts of the country."

B.C. resident Taara Chan says although she used to vacation in Mexico, she doesn't plan to return any time soon.

"In light of recent events, and just overall with the political things that have been going on over the last few years ... I can't say I would," she said. "I loved it there and I have fond memories, but now we have kids too and I just don't feel like it's safe."

'Just risking your life'

Vancouver resident Greg Elliott says he would consider travel to Mexico, but only in certain areas.

"I wouldn't travel along the border, of course, but say Mexico City or the Aztec or Mayan ruins [are] probably safe."

That's the opinion Ignacio Arrieta, co-owner of La Taqueria restaurant in Vancouver, hopes most people have. Arrieta is from Chihuahua province, one of Mexico's most dangerous regions.

"There's places in Mexico that are safe and that are beautiful, more beautiful than any other place in the world," he said. "There's places that I would say do not go please, it's just risking your life, like my home unfortunately."

Arrieta says he hopes people still choose to travel to Mexico, but only in regions known to be safe.

The number of Canadians killed in Mexico has increased in recent years, from three in 2009 to six in 2011.
