The girlfriend of a young man who disappeared nearly two weeks ago in downtown Vancouver has arrived from Colorado to help with the search.

Matthew Huszar, 25, was last seen leaving a staff Christmas party at the Lamplighter pub on the 100-block of Water Street in Gastown just before midnight on Dec. 16. Despite an extensive search by police, friends, and family, he hasn't been seen since.

His girlfriend Emilie Whittemore, who last spoke to him just hours before he went missing, said his disappearance is completely unexpected. She describes Huszar as somebody with everything to live for.

"There is no reason whatsoever that he would leave. He's a successful geologist. He has a great family that cares about him — just got a sailboat," she said.

Whittemore says they aren't giving up hope of finding him, and reached out with a message to him shortly after she arrived in Vancouver on Tuesday night.

"He is loved. He is very much loved and everybody wants him home, and to be strong if he is in a difficult situation and just work on coming home, and we are all thinking about him," she said.

Huszar is described as Caucasian, about five feet 11 inches tall and weighing around 160 pounds. He has shoulder-length brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing black dress pants, a white and blue-checked shirt, black shoes and a dark green tweed coat with a coarse check pattern.

Anyone who sees Huszar is asked to call Vancouver police.

Huszar has been working for Pretium Resources and living in East Vancouver. His family recently moved to Vancouver Island from Lethbridge Alberta.
