The risk is highest in the Columbia Mountain range. (Canadian Avalanche Centre)Avalanche forecasters are keeping a close watch on the mountains in B.C.'s Interior over the holiday weekend.
Matt Peter, a forecaster with the Canadian Avalanche Centre, said is a considerable risk of a slide in the Columbia Mountain region.
"There was a long dry period where the surface snow became quite loose," he said. "There has been a bit of new snow that has fallen onto the loose surface."
More snow is expected to fall over the weekend on the already unstable snowpack.
Peter expects the Kootenay Boundary region will also see avalanche risk levels rise.
He urges anyone going into the backcountry over the Christmas holiday to take extra caution.
