University of British Columbia masters student Rumana Monzur is getting medical treatment in Vancouver, but further procedures will be needed to determine how much, if any, of her sight can be restored.

Since Monzur's arrival back in Vancouver, she has had three surgeries at Vancouver General Hospital, with further surgery scheduled for later this week, officials at UBC say.

Doctors describe the damage to her left eye as catastrophic and say they still don't know whether there is any chance of restoring vision to that eye.

Her eyes were damaged in early June when she was allegedly attacked by her husband while visiting her family in Bangladesh. She returned to Vancouver with her father earlier this month for treatment.

$58,000 raised

UBC students continue to hold events to raise funds for Monzur and to raise awareness about violence against women. So far they have raised $58,000 to support Monzur and her family during her treatment.

"I am so grateful to everyone for their support, it gives me so much hope," said Monzur in a statement issued by UBC with her permission.

"Once my doctors and I know more about the condition of my eyes, I hope to update everyone who has been so kind to me."

Monzur's daughter and mother are expected to arrive in Vancouver soon, said the school.

"My daughter is eagerly waiting to get to me, and she is actually counting her days," she said.
