An RCMP police dog was killed in an early morning traffic accident in Richmond, B.C. on Tuesday.

The accident happened near the intersection of the Westminster Highway and Number 7 Road around 1:30 a.m. PT when the police dog's handler was responding to a report of a theft.

The police cruiser and another vehicle crashed, causing the cruiser to cross the road and hit a power pole.

The occupants of both vehicles were uninjured, but a two-year-old police service dog named Bo was killed in the crash.

"The handler is obviously upset," said Staff Sgt. Ron Field of the Lower Mainland Police Dog Services.

"Bo was his first dog and he's lost his partner. It's a tough thing."

RCMP Cpl. Sherrdean Turley said Bo was only about eight months into his career following five months of intense training with his handler at the RCMP's Police Dog Service Training Facility in Innisfail, Alberta.

"Police dogs receive regimental numbers just as every other sworn member of the RCMP and are heroes in every sense of the word," said Turley.

"From finding missing children to locating discarded weapons at crime scenes to facing dangers head-on to save the lives of their handlers, I don't know how front line officers could do their jobs if it wasn't for our police dogs," said Turley.
