B.C. baby rescued from locked car by RCMP

Police broke into a car to remove an infant who'd been left alone in the vehicle in the heat of the day in a Kelowna, B.C., parking lot Monday.
The temperature outside was near 30 C and much hotter in the car's interior when RCMP officers smashed through the car window to rescue the four-month-old female, said spokesman Const. Steve Holmes.
The baby was taken to hospital where doctors found she had an elevated core temperature but was not suffering from heat stroke.
Police were alerted to the child's situation just after 12:30 p.m. PT by a passerby in a Zellers parking lot who saw the child in the car with the windows almost completely rolled up, said Holmes.
Two women who later returned to the vehicle said they had been shopping for only 10 minutes and the baby was fine.
One of the women was the child's 22-year-old mother from Alberta, who might face charges, Holmes said.
"Babies and toddlers are not able to regulate their body temperatures by removing clothing to compensate for the heat," Holmes said in a release. "They are at the mercy of whoever has the keys to the vehicle unless someone intervenes."
Holmes said the B.C. Ministry of Children and Family Development is also investigating.
