Vancouver police say they have so far catalogued 4,000 emails from the public about the June 15 downtown riot and have flagged 1,700 of those that identify potential suspects in 120 separate incidents.

"The Integrated Riot Investigation Team (IRIT) is steadily moving forward in the process of sorting through thousands of pieces of information and photos related to the riot," spokeswoman Const. Jana McGuinness said in a release Tuesday.

McGuinness said that 24 people have turned themselves in to police.

"Each of these cases is being fully investigated to determine the extent of the person's involvement in the riot," she said.

More investigation is needed to determine whether any supporting evidence exists, such as video or photographs, that will need to be matched up to an individual, said McGuinness.

"Due to the complexity of matching up thousands of images, tips and related information to each suspect, the investigation is expected to be lengthy and complex," McGuinnes said.

She said the Crown may not lay charges for several weeks, in most cases due to the extraordinary volume of evidence that still needs to be examined.

The IRIT is made up of 30 police officers and 13 technicians and specialists.
