Climate change will lead to rising sea levels but not an increase in waves or storms, according to a new report issued by the B.C. government. Jonathan Hayward/Canadian PressA new report from the B.C. government is warning builders and developers to plan for a one metre rise in the sea level within the next 90 years.
The report, Climate Change Adaption Guidelines for Sea Dikes and Coastal Flood Hazard Land Use, predicts that sea levels will rise faster and greater than previously thought.
It recommends land use planners take into consideration a 0.5-metre rise in sea levels for developments with design life spans up to the year 2050, and 1.0 metres up to the year 2100.
The report says the frequency and intensity of coastal wave and storm surge events are not expected to change significantly, but significant cross-government collaboration and education will be needed to deal with the effects on B.C.'s coastal communities.
