Armed robbers hit B.C. gold firm in Brazil

The Aurizona gold mine is about 2,000 kilometres north of Rio de Janeiro. (Luna Gold Corp.)A B.C.-based mining company has been robbed of about $2 million worth of gold at its operation in Brazil.
The robbery occurred at Luna Gold Corp.'s Aurizona gold mine early Wednesday, company president John Blake said in a release.
"A group of armed robbers gained access to the site and escaped with approximately 1,500 ounces of gold," Blake said. "No employees were injured during the robbery."
The price of gold closed at more than $1,400 US an ounce on Wednesday.
Blake said Luna Gold had bought insurance to cover this type of loss with an internationally recognized company and is filing a claim.
The robbery is under investigation by Maranhao State Police in the area, about 2,000 kilometres north of Rio de Janeiro.
Shares in the company rose three cents to 78 cents Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
