Some of the haul of doda and opium poppies allegedly seized in Delta, B.C. (CBC)Police in Delta, B.C., have seized six kilograms of the highly addictive opiate doda, CBC News has learned.
A raid on a flower shop in the municipality south of Vancouver also turned up 15 kilograms of opium poppy seed for planting and 10 large boxes of dried opium poppy seed cases from which doda is produced, police say.
The raid was conducted at the Jojo Flowers shop near the border between Delta and Surrey in mid-August, police said Tuesday.
Police have recommended possession and trafficking charges against a 47-year-old man.
Doda is manufactured from poppy seed cases, which are ground into a powder and often made into a tea.
The substance has become the second-worst addiction problem in Metro Vancouver's South Asian community after alcohol, counsellors have said. Police have been cracking down on makers and sellers of doda, with a number of raids in recent months.
"We're hoping that we can generate some information from the general public should they see it in production," said Delta police spokeswoman Const. Sharlene Brooks.

The Delta raid preceded a massive bust Aug. 23 in Chilliwack, B.C., where a field of 60,000 opium poppies was allegedly being cultivated to produce doda. It was the biggest opium poppy seizure ever in Canada, RCMP said.
