A woman in her home in the 800 block of Cardero Street heard a man's voice crying for help from the back of a passing garbage truck at about 8 a.m. PT Thursday, Const. Jana McGuinness said.
The woman ran into the lane and stopped the driver who called 911 and began unloading the compacted garbage to free the man, said McGuinness.
Once out of the truck, the man told police that he was inside a dumpster when it was emptied into the back of the truck near Davie and Burrard Streets.
The man was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment of broken bones and severe bruising, said McGuinness.
She said the incident is still under investigation, but appears to be accidental.
