A 12-year-old Vancouver Island boy, who police say has a long criminal history, has been arrested for allegedly robbing a man at gunpoint.
Nanaimo RCMP said they arrested the boy at about 11:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday after an armed robbery in the area of Terminal Avenue and Nicol Street.
Police said the victim was getting out of his car when two male bicyclists approached him.
One of them pointed a gun and demanded the victim's cellphone and other items.
The victim called police, who later found and arrested the 12-year-old boy in the area. He can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police say they are still investigating whether the 18-year-old on the other bike was involved.
They said the boy has had more than 100 run-ins with police since the age of nine. Some of his arrests and convictions have been for serious offences, police said, but the nature of the crimes cannot be released because of his age.
The boy was scheduled to appear in Nanaimo Provincial Court on Wednesday.
