An Encana well in B.C.'s northeastern corner is still burning after a blowout during a drilling operation.

Company spokesperson Carol Howes said crews are trying to cap the well following the blowout early Saturday morning about 100 kilometres northeast of Fort Nelson.

One person needed first aid at the scene after being slightly hurt, but Howes said the well was evacuated safely.

A small amount of sweet gas was released but there are no residents near the well, located south of Kotcho Lake.

An Encana well control team is on scene to deal with the blaze and Howes said the Calgary-based company and B.C.'s Oil and Gas Commission will investigate the cause.

Encana operations in northeastern B.C. have been hit by six deliberately set blasts since October 2008, but no charges have been laid in those incidents.
