Three people have died and two others are in hospital in critical condition after a crash on the Trans-Canada Highway in southeastern B.C.

RCMP Cpl. Rod Wiebe said the collision, which involved a car and an SUV, happened on Friday afternoon about 50 kilometres east of Revelstoke.

"There is a Ford Mustang that is totalled, which had contained two of the people who died," he said.

"As well, a Jeep Liberty was involved, which contained the other person who passed away."

Wiebe said a preliminary investigation suggests the car crossed the centre line and clipped an eastbound pickup truck. The truck managed to gain control and safely stop but the car crashed head-on with the SUV.

The driver of the Mustang has been identified as a 23-year-old Calgary resident, while her passenger was a 31-year-old male from Nigeria.

The third victim is a 40-year-old female from Summerland, B.C., who was a passenger inside the Jeep. The two people transported to hospital were also riding inside the SUV.
