A 35-year-old New Westminster man has been charged in connection with an attempted sexual assault in south Vancouver earlier this month.

Benjamin Palk, also known as Benjamin Palk Trussart, was arrested on July 16.

In a written statement sent out on Sunday, police said Palk has been charged with one count of sexual assault.

The arrest comes after an alleged attempted sexual assault on July 6.

Police say a 19-year-old woman had gotten off a bus in the 3500 block of S.E. Marine Drive at about 11:15 p.m. PT.

She was allegedly followed by a man, who then tried to drag her into some bushes along a trail leading north from the street.

The attacker ran off after a member of the public intervened.

Police are still hoping to speak with the witness who stopped the attack. He is asked to contact the Vancouver Police Department's sex crimes unit at 604-717-2644.

Palk is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday. He is not known to police.
