The mangled wreckage of a Cessna lodged between a building and some trees at the Apex Mountain resort near Penticton, B.C. (CHBC)A small airplane clipped a low-rise condominium and ended up wedged between the building and some trees at a B.C. ski resort Friday after the pilot attempted an emergency landing.
The 35-year-old pilot and his passenger were uninjured except for some bruises, said RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.
The pilot was attempting to land the four-seat Cessna 172 on a road adjacent to the parking lot at the Apex Mountain resort near Penticton, about 250 kilometres east of Vancouver, but he didn't make it to the road.
"Quite an amazing sight," Moskaluk said of the twisted wreckage. The plane "got caught up in a couple of trees right beside the condominium, and then came down on its side along the roofline of the condo," he said, adding that the two people in the aircraft were "very fortunate."
The damage to the building was still being assessed, but the plane appeared to be a writeoff. The scene has been secured until Transport Canada investigators determine the reason for the emergency landing.
