The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says a Coquitlam man will be undergoing a psychiatric evaluation after being charged in the death of his mother.

Blake Salemink, 23, is facing manslaughter after his mother, Colette Salemink, 59, died in a house fire on Burian Drive on April 19.

IHIT's Corporal Dale Carr said investigators believe the fire was deliberately set by Blake Salemink, who has a history mental health issues.

"Really this is an extremely sad story really. He has those issues that he's been dealing with for a good portion of his life, and now the death of his mother. It's a really sad story," said Carr.

Police tracked Salemink down in Oregon after the fire and he decided to voluntarily return to Canada, said Carr.

Salemink's next court appearance is on Friday.
