Luxury suites were available at GM Place to B.C. Liberal government members during the Olympics if they were on official business, according to provincial minister of state for the Olympics, Mary McNeil. (CBC)The B.C. NDP wants to know why two Surrey Liberal MLAs got taxpayer-funded tickets worth more than $1,800 to attend Olympics events, including a concert by Nelly Furtado.
Opposition finance critic Bruce Ralston says the tickets were scooped up by Health Minister Kevin Falcon and MLA Dave Hayer.
Both Liberals took in some preliminary hockey games and Hayer was seated in a luxury suite for two victory ceremonies that included performances by Furtado and the rock band Hedley, Ralston said in Victoria Wednesday.
Ralston said he wants to know what business deals Hayer got signed during these events, saying it doesn't make sense for the Liberal backbencher to have been there unless he paid for his own tickets.
The provincial government revealed May 6 that it had spent $970,000 on Olympic tickets for politicians, dignitaries, business leaders and members of the public.
B.C. Minister of State for the Olympics Mary McNeil said in October 2009 that the government was taking a business-like approach to doling out Games tickets to politicians.
"No MLAs will be getting any access to the 3,000 tickets unless they are on official business for the government," McNeil said.
