The developer of a massive condo project in Surrey, B.C., destroyed in a fire 18 months ago says the project will be ready to start selling units next month.

Charan Sethi of Tien Sher told CBC News the last couple of years have been tough, but he returned all deposits with interest to the original buyers.

"Unfortunately, I've been hit with some of the worst things a developer can ever not wish for, which is a fire, an economic downturn," said Sethi.

Parts of the development, which contained 1,150 units spread over four hectares, burned to the ground in October 2008.

"It all happened to me at the same time but I was so fortunate because everybody on my team, the bankers, the City of Surrey, the neighbourhood, everybody came together so good and we were up and running very, very quickly," he said.

Now those original buyers will have the first chance to buy in the new building, says Sethi, who promises the Quattro 3 project located in the heart of Whalley, will have a Yaletown feel.

Sethi said the city's revitalization of the area is giving people more confidence about moving there. The City of Surrey is planning to create a new town centre in the neighbourhood and build a $33-million library.
