Transportation
Paralympic tickets will be valid for free all day travel on the day of the event during the Paralympic Games. (CBC)VANOC officials say extra transit and some road closures will be returning during the Paralympic Games, but not to the same extent as during the 2010 Winter Olympics last month.
The limited closures reflect the smaller crowds on the streets and at the events organizers are expecting during the Paralympic Games, which open Friday at BC Place.
- Road closures will be in effect in downtown Vancouver on Friday, including the streets around BC Place, Robson Street and Georgia Street for the torch relay and opening ceremony.
- Except for during the torch relay on March 11 and 12, there will be no street closures to create pedestrian corridors.
- The Yaletown live site will not reopen, but the Live City site downtown near GM Place will be back in operation, along with the Robson Square Celebration site and the Whistler live site.
- The Olympic lanes that limited traffic and parking in downtown Vancouver will not be in effect and traffic on the Sea to Sky highway will not be restricted.
- There will be no special bus network to provide special service to any Paralympic venues, but Paralympic event tickets will be good for free unlimited travel on the TransLink system on the date of the event.
During the opening ceremony on March 12:
- The Cambie Street Bridge and the Georgia Viaduct will be closed from 10 a.m. PT until midnight on March 12 and the number 15 bus route will only serve the portion of its route south of False Creek during that time.
- The SkyTrain will have extra trains running on the Expo and Millennium lines before and after the ceremony, and additional trains available for the Canada Line if needed.
- The SeaBus will run two vessels following the ceremonies to help deal with crowds, and the Coast Mountain Bus Company will have additional buses available if needed.
- Buses to and from North Vancouver will travel via Georgia Street to Pender Street to Richards Street, then to Georgia Street for the return trip.
- Due to the closure of Cambie and Quebec Streets, the C21 and C23 community shuttles will be re-routed via Seymour, Pender and Main Streets, returning via Main, Pender and Richards Streets.
- An accessible shuttle bus will provide service for those with mobility issues between Yaletown-Roundhouse Station and BC Place Stadium from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m.
Temporary parking and stopping restrictions on the following streets will continue to be in effect through to March 21:
- Hastings Street between Main Street and Burrard Street.
- Smithe Street between Expo Street and Howe Street.
- Nelson Street between Thurlow Street and Beatty Street.
- King Edward Avenue between Oak Street and Sophia Street.
- Cambie Street between King Edward Avenue and 33rd Avenue.
- 2nd and 6th Ave between Hemlock Street to Main Street.
- Main Street from 2nd Avenue to Terminal Avenue.
During the Games themselves, the Coast Mountain Bus Company will provide additional service to and from the Games venues, with the folllowing route changes:
- The number 5 Downtown and the N6 NightBus will travel via Thurlow, Smithe, Burrard and Pender Streets. The number 5 Robson will route via Pender and Burrard Streets.
- The number 50 False Creek South will continue to run along Seymour and Howe until March 21.
- The C21 and C23 community shuttles will be routed away from Expo and Pacific Boulevards for the first two days of the Games. They will return to their regular routes when Expo and Pacific Boulevards reopen on Tuesday, March 16.
- Twelve additional buses will be added to the 99 B-Line route to and from UBC, where the ice sledge hockey events will be held.
- Accessible shuttles will run between King Edward Station and the Vancouver Paralympic Centre for the wheelchair curling events.
Out at UBC:
- Buses will continue to be detoured away from Wesbrook Mall. Buses will be approaching the UBC loops via 16th Avenue, Blanca and University Boulevard, and via Southwest/Northwest Marine Drive and Wesbrook Mall, approaching the UBC loop from the north.
- Community shuttles will detour via University Boulevard and East Mall.
- Accessible shuttles will run between the UBC bus loop and Thunderbird Arena.
