This area outside of Victoria High School was the site of a weekend brawl. (CBC) An argument over a stolen cellphone appears to have triggered a brawl involving more than two dozen Victoria-area teenagers that resulted in two youths requiring hospital treatment early Saturday morning, police say.
Officers were called to the grounds of Victoria High School about 12:30 a.m. PT
"Obviously, there was some sort of dispute between a couple of people," Victoria police Sgt. Grant Hamilton said Tuesday.
He said what might have been a minor disagreement quickly grew to involve as many as 30 young people.
"They called friends who showed up and other friends showed up and you know in this day and age with social media, they're texting each other all the time and it becomes one group against another group and that seems to be the case here."
Two females, aged 17 and 18, were treated in hospital and released after being beaten and kicked in the head, Hamilton said.
The fight occurred in an area of the school grounds where young people gather after school and on weekends, according to neighbourhood residents.
"It's kind of normal, the noise that's being made here, because it's every weekend. There's high school kids partying it up," Christian Vargas told CBC News.
Hamilton said while there were a lot of witnesses to the brawl, few are co-operating with police.
