British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California have signed two agreements aimed at boosting the West Coast economy and protecting the environment.

The deals were signed in Vancouver at a meeting of B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell, Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California.

B.C. and the three states promised to work together on issues such as energy conservation and a high-speed rail service from San Diego to Vancouver.

Commitments were also made to reduce ocean pollution, make fishing more sustainable and do research on ways to adapt to climate change.

The agreements will help make the West Coast a global leader in efforts to forge an environmentally friendly economy, Campbell said.

Schwarzenegger, who carried the Olympic flame in Vancouver earlier in the day, said the deals would help build a stronger economy and a stronger environment for communities throughout the Pacific region.
