Officials at Mount Washington Alpine Resort say Olympic athletes are more than welcome to train on its slopes. (CBC)A Vancouver Island resort wants to help Olympic athletes affected by the cancellation of training days at Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver.
Competitors in the Olympic snowboard halfpipe will now have three days to train at Cypress instead of five. Officials with Vancouver's Olympic Organizing Committee said the decision was made to preserve snow.
The mountain has suffered from the warmest January on record, forcing organizers into an extensive contingency plan that has involved bringing in snow from across the province.
But at Mount Washington Alpine Resort, near Courtenay on Vancouver Island, record-breaking snowfall has built up a base of almost four metres.
Spokesperson Brent Curtain said the resort is willing to help athletes who want to train on its slopes at a "minimal cost."
"We know that there are a lot of teams out there in need of training space and we do have it available," Curtain said.
"We'd have to take each team on a case-by-case scenario and see where they're at and help them in any way we can."
Curtain said Mount Washington is already the training home for more than 300 athletes from 15 countries.
Meanwhile, Olympic organizers are busing freestyle skiers and snowboarders to the host mountain resort of Whistler, B.C., so they can prepare for their competitions.
Spokesperson Tim Gayda said he's confident the Olympic events slated for Cypress will take place as scheduled.
But Gayda also said more training days could be cancelled if warm weather continues.
