U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden and his wife Jill will lead the U.S. delegation to the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver Olympics on Feb. 12.

In addition to attending the ceremonies, the delegation will visit American athletes and meet with other dignitaries and world leaders, the White House said Tuesday.

The delegation will include David Jacobson, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to President Barack Obama, and several past U.S. Olympic champions.

The U.S. delegation to the closing ceremonies will include Jacobson and Janet Napolitano, the head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The announcement did not say if Obama would attend any of the Olympic events.
