One man is dead after the small plane he was flying crashed Monday near Nelson, in southeast B.C.

The Nelson RCMP detachment and the Nelson search and rescue team responded to the report of a downed plane at about 4 p.m. PT, police said.

The pilot apparently survived the crash and called a friend on a cellphone to report the crash and his location, said RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.

The friend then called authorities.

But when rescue teams reached the wreckage site near Taghum, five kilometres west of Nelson, at about 8:30 p.m., they found the pilot without vital signs.

Attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful, Moskaluk said.

The pilot is reported to be a 57-year-old man from Trail.

He was en route from Trail to Nelson in a Cessna 172 single-engined aircraft, a flight of about 65 kilometres.

The cause of the crash is not known.
