With just one month to go until the opening of the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, Olympic officials are rolling out the final parts of their massive transportation plan, including a four-day closure of a major downtown bridge.

Olympic organizers are expecting an estimated 100,000 spectators, visitors, reporters and TV crews, volunteers, and performers to flock to Vancouver's downtown core each day during the 17 days of the Olympic Games, drawn by the sporting events and dozens of corporate pavilions and free cultural events.

On Tuesday morning VANOC officials added two new road closures to the growing list of disruptions caused by the Games, which already include one major highway, a busy overpass, and parking on many downtown streets.

In order to accommodate the opening and closing ceremonies for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and one dress rehearsal involving thousands of volunteers, the Cambie Street Bridge and Beatty Street, between Smithe Street and West Georgia Street, will temporarily shut down between noon and midnight on Feb. 10, 12 and 28, and March 12.

Organizers and transit officials are also advising the general public to use transit during the Olympic Games, which run from Feb. 12 to 28, particularly if people are heading downtown during peak travel times.

"We need every resident, commuter and employer in the Games region to pull together and adjust their transportation routines to make these Games a success," said Terry Wright, VANOC's executive vice president of services.

Olympic officials are also planning a public open house on Wednesday between 11 a.m. PT and 1:30 p.m. at Robson Square in downtown Vancouver to talk about the transportation restrictions during the Games.
