A drunk woman was found slumped unconscious over the steering wheel of a stopped van with two young children in the back, police in Saanich, B.C., said Thursday.
The Toyota van was spotted at about 7:30 p.m. PT Wednesday on the front lawn of a property.
Breath tests showed the 31-year-old Esquimalt mother had blood-alcohol levels five times the legal limit, said Saanich police Sgt. Julie Fast.
It was believed the woman was driving the van before it was found on the lawn. The vehicle did not appear to have been involved in a collision.
Police are recommending charges of impaired driving, Fast said.
The woman was taken to hospital and the children, aged four and six, were taken to the police department in the community just north of Victoria and picked up by their father.
The Ministry of Children and Family Services was also notified about the incident, said police.
Fast said the youngsters were cold and hungry but otherwise unharmed.
