Vancouver will be getting $30 million from the federal government for infrastructure projects, International Trade Minister Stockwell said Tuesday. (CBC)Vancouver will be receiving $30 million in federal funding for 26 infrastructure projects to be completed over the next year, International Trade Minister Stockwell Day announced Tuesday.
Added to $56 million being kicked in by the city, it means major improvements to roads, municipal buildings and even the city's jewel, Stanley Park.
"On behalf of the prime minister and the federal government, $30 million to the City of Vancouver for 26 infrastructure projects that are very needed … not just the work itself for the projects but added economic jobs and stimulus for the local economy," Day said.
Deputy Mayor George Chow said there will be no delays.
"We have to finish by 2011, that's the deadline," Chow said. "If we want to get paid by the federal government we better finish it by March 2011."
The money breaks down this way:
- $16 million for road improvements, including repaving in Queen Elizabeth Park.
- $36 million for sewer and water upgrades.
- Nearly $13 million for municipal buildings, including renovations to the Orpheum Theatre and the heritage exterior of City Hall, as well as a new police forensic centre.
- More than $14 million will go to Stanley Park for road repaving, refurbishing the Malkin Bowl theatre and repairs to the seawall.
