As many as eight people have been forced from their homes after a fire at a seniors' complex in Abbotsford, B.C., Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the Abbotsford Housing Co-operative, in the 23000 block of Marshall Road, just after 2 p.m. PT.

The Abbotsford Fire Department had to call in reinforcements from nearby communities to help battle the blaze.

Officials say at least two units in the fourplex have been gutted, and at least one other was badly damaged by smoke.

Deputy fire Chief Mike Helmer said between six and eight people have been displaced because of the fire.

He said most are staying with friends and family.

Investigators say it's believed the blaze was started by a cigarette left on a balcony.

Damages to the complex are estimated to be approximately $100,000.

Abbotsford is about 70 kilometres southeast of Vancouver.
