Federal government economic stimulation funds are being put to use to spruce up a well-known Vancouver waterfront landmark.

The government of Canada is spending $21 million towards a new roof for Canada Place. The familiar tensioned fabric roof, designed to look like large white sails, is due for replacement.

Mike Shardlow, president of Canada Place Corp., said the funding is an important investment in a Canadian icon.

Officials say construction will start after the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

Canada Place was the pavilion for Canada at Expo 86. The sails have since suffered several rips and tears.

The new roof will use technically advanced materials, but the look will stay the same.
