Vancouver firefighters battled a two-alarm fire at the Little Mountain social housing complex in Vancouver on Tuesday night.

The fire broke out just before 6 p.m. at the site at Main Street and east 33rd Avenue, where demolition crews have been working as part of a controversial redevelopment project.

There were no reports of injuries, and no word yet on what might have started the fire.

The complex, built in the early 1950s, was the oldest social housing development in Vancouver.

The six-hectare site was once home to about 700 people in 37 buildings.

The provincial government intends to sell the land to Holborn Properties, which plans to build market housing and subsidized units on the site over the next 10 years.

Protesters marched carrying placards calling for more public housing when demolition began last Friday.
