One man is dead after an apparently targeted back alley shooting in Burnaby, B.C., Wednesday afternoon.

Police said they received 911 calls about 4:30 p.m. PT reporting multiple shots.

They arrived in the lane behind by Dancin' Stars Performing Arts, at 7757 Edmonds St., to find one man lying dead beside a black SUV.

"It appears it was targeted," Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team told reporters.

Carr said the victim had not been identified.

"I can confirm that it is a male. I cannot confirm the race or age at this point," Carr said.

Helicopter news footage obtained by CBC News shows a white tarp covering a body lying beside the car.

Witnesses said at least two people were shooting at each other, and at least one of them sped away in a minivan.

Police were conducting a door-to-door canvass of the neighbourhood Wednesday evening.
