Search and rescue crews are using helicopters to search for a 70-year-old man who failed to return from a hike in the North Shore Mountains above West Vancouver four days ago.

Tim Jones of the North Shore Rescue team said the family and friends of Edward Barry Sharpe say he is an avid hiker who is prepared for emergencies.

Sharpe was in good physical condition when he left for his hike in Cypress Provincial Park on Monday, and it's believed he was carrying flashlights, an emergency blanket, a campstove and two cans of soup.

A witness said they saw Sharpe around 2 p.m. Monday hiking toward the Hollyburn Ridge area.
