Two B.C. men are recovering following a bizarre attack in which they were slashed across the face by a man wearing gloves with blades attached.

The victims said they were attacked outside the Fulford Inn on Saltspring Island, north of Victoria, around 10 p.m. PT Monday, according to a statement released by Cpl. Darren Lagan.

One of the victims in the attack, John Moysey, said that prior to being injured he had called out to a man he thought he recognized.

The man then attacked him, saying "I am death," said Moysey, 66.

"He lunged and there was a clatter of metal against my glasses and I guess my teeth," Moysey said.

He showed CBC News a three-pointed blade that he said had come off one of the gloves used in the incident.

Moysey and the other victim, aged 54, were treated by paramedics for facial lacerations.

Meanwhile, officers located a 39-year-old male suspect walking down Fulford-Ganges Road, near Beaver Point Road, a short time after the attack and arrested him. A further search by RCMP using dogs turned up a weapon matching the description provided by witnesses, said police.

Lorn Nelson faces two charges of assault with a weapon, and one charge each of mischief, uttering threats, and possession of a weapon, police said.

Nelson made his first court appearance Tuesday, and was remanded into custody, to undergo psychiatric assessment. He will next appear in Duncan Provincial Court on Oct. 6, said police.
