RCMP and Victoria police say they are confident they have broken a major drug trafficking operation, one year after seizing 15 kilograms of cocaine and quantities of ecstasy, methamphetamine and other drugs.

The drugs and more than $160,000 in cash were seized in two raids on Vancouver Island in September 2008.

RCMP announced Wednesday that eight people have now been charged with a variety of drug offences and warrants have been issued for three others in connection with the 2008 seizures.

"The disruption to this particular organization, when you see the amounts of ecstasy and the amounts of cocaine that were seized, it's significant for this area," said Staff Sgt. Dave Goddard of the RCMP's Island District Drug Section.

In addition to the cocaine, more than 14,000 ecstasy pills, 90 grams of methamphetamine, one 750-millilitre bottle of gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid [GHB], a Glock handgun, three vehicles, money-counting machines and the cash were seized jointly during the investigation, police said.

Goddard declined to give a precise street value for the drugs seized, but said it was in the millions of dollars.

The RCMP had gathered information since 2007 on what the police force believed was a criminal organization actively distributing cocaine on Vancouver Island, Goddard said.

After a five-month investigation, RCMP requested the assistance of the Victoria police, who participated in the 2008 raids.

The accused were scheduled to appear in court Sept. 21 in Victoria.
