Searchers found a toddler who had wandered away from a campsite near Tay Creek, about 50 kilometres north of Ross River, Yukon. (CBC)A two-year-old boy who walked away from a campsite north of Ross River, Yukon, was found safe on Friday afternoon following an air and ground search.
The boy was initially reported missing from the campsite near Tay Creek at about 6 p.m. PT Thursday. Tay Creek is just off the North Canol Highway, about 50 kilometres from Ross River.
RCMP Sgt. Don Rogers said from Whitehorse that the boy came across a dog in the vicinity of his campground on Thursday and that the toddler followed the dog into the bush
The young boy was located about 850 metres from the campground, in "remarkably good shape" — still with the dog, Rogers said.
"I'm not sure if the dog cuddled up to him in the night and provided him with extra warmth, but [it] wouldn't surprise me," he told CBC News.
At one point, nearly 20 police officers and rescue officials, a search dog, and a helicopter with infrared radar were searching for the boy.
After the child was reunited with his parents, RCMP took the family to Ross River for further examination by emergency medical services.
Police said the child's family is believed to be from the Kamloops, B.C., area.
