Authorities on both sides of the border are pulling together to track down a fugitive reality TV star, Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan says.

Van Loan said Saturday RCMP in the greater Vancouver area are leading the manhunt for Calgary native Ryan Jenkins, charged with first-degree murder in the death of his ex-wife, whose mutilated body was found in a Los Angeles dumpster.

Van Loan said Canadian and U.S. authorities are taking the Jenkins case seriously and continue to maintain a vigilant and active search, although there is still no confirmation that he entered Canada.

There have been a string of unconfirmed sightings of Jenkins across the country, one of them a Vancouver Island store employee who said a man fitting Jenkins's description came in to buy a phone memory card on Friday morning.

The father of the wanted man said Saturday that authorities have not requested he ask his son to give himself up to police.

"I was just in a meeting with Canadian authorities," Dan Jenkins told the Calgary Sun. "They didn't urge me to do that."

He added that on the advice of his lawyer that he would not comment on whether he had been in touch with his son.

False alarm at Pearson

The hunt for Jenkins resumed early Saturday after a man detained at Toronto's Pearson Airport turned out not to be the former Calgary real estate developer and reality TV show contestant wanted in the death of his ex-wife in California.

Peel Region police Staff Sgt. Keith Brodie said early Saturday a man was detained and questioned after an Air Canada flight from Vancouver landed in Toronto around 11:30 p.m. ET Friday. He did not identify the man but said he co-operated with police.

Brodie later confirmed that the man was not Jenkins.

Brodie said RCMP in Vancouver had alerted Peel police that a man resembling Jenkins was on the flight to Toronto.

Jenkins is believed to be on the run in Canada after being charged with murdering Jasmine Fiore, 28.

The former model's nude body was found last Saturday, stuffed in a suitcase that had been thrown into a metal trash bin in Buena Park, southeast of Los Angeles. Her teeth and fingers had been removed in an apparent attempt to prevent identification.

Fiore was identified through serial numbers on her breast implants. She was badly beaten and preliminary reports indicate she was strangled.

The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $25,000 US reward for information leading to the capture of Jenkins.

He faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life if convicted. Prosecutors have already requested bail of $10 million US.

Jenkins is believed to be on the run after driving 1,600 kilometres from southern California to Washington state. He is suspected to have used a boat to get to Point Roberts, Wash., a small community near the Canada-U.S. border.

Police believe Jenkins walked from there across the border to British Columbia.
