Ernie McLean was found Thursday evening, five kilometres from where he was last seen Aug. 16. (CBC)Renowned amateur hockey coach Ernie (Punch) McLean has been found alive after being missing in the northern B.C. wilderness for four days.
McLean, 77, was found about five kilometres from where he was last seen by a geologist he'd been working with while surveying a gold claim, according to Dease Lake RCMP.
Police said McLean appeared to be in good health but was taken to a local hospital for examination.
He had been reported missing Aug. 16 near Turnagain Lake in the Dease Lake area, 500 kilometres southeast of Whitehorse.
RCMP officers, the force's canine unit, search-and-rescue personnel and staff from the B.C. Forest Service were involved in the search, an RCMP release said Wednesday.
The area is mountainous and remote, accessible only by all-terrain vehicle and by air, police said.
McLean coached the New Westminster Bruins to back-to-back Memorial Cup victories in the late 1970s.
