Three members of the same family died Tuesday evening in a multi-vehicle collision south of Leduc, 35 kilometres south of Edmonton.

The crash instantly killed Rita McGillivray, 53, and Ian McGillivray, 60 — a couple from Surrey, B.C. — and Rita McGillivray's 77-year-old mother, Marie Zetsen, of Camrose, Alta.

Their Buick Lucerne, which was being driven by Rita McGillivray, was hit head-on at about 6:30 p.m. on Highway 2A after a southbound Dodge Ram went onto the shoulder and then veered back on the road and into the northbound lane, said Leduc RCMP.

The truck collided with the northbound Buick and an Acura Integra behind the Buick, police said.

The driver of the Acura was not injured.

The 36-year-old driver of the truck was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Emergency vehicles lined the highway to block the road after the collision.

RCMP believe alcohol was a factor in the collision and are still investigating. However, no charges have been laid.
