A young child in Metro Vancouver is the first known British Columbian to die from the H1N1 influenza virus.
A young Metro Vancouver woman who lived with someone who had the H1N1 virus has also died. She also had an underlying medical condition, and was admitted to hospital last Wednesday. It has not been confirmed that she had the H1N1 virus.
B.C. health officer Dr. Perry Kendall extended his sympathies to families of both the child and the woman.
"As unfortunate and tragic as these cases are, it was not unexpected that British Columbia would see some deaths caused by or associated with the H1N1 flu virus," said Kendall.
There have been 382 confirmed cases of the H1N1 influenza virus in B.C. Fourteen people were admitted to hospital, and five of those were admitted to an intensive care unit.
