Jay Phillips fights off three white attackers in a video posted of the incident in Courtenay, B.C. (YouTube)Three B.C. men have been charged with assault over an attack caught on amateur video that police have suggested may have had racial overtones.
The charges relate to a fight in the Vancouver Island town of Courtenay on July 3, which was filmed by a witness and posted on YouTube.
Jay Phillips, who is black, is seen on the video being attacked by three men who can be heard shouting racial slurs.
The RCMP have charged David White, 19, Adam Huber, 24, and William Rogers, 25, with assault.
Police have said they are investigating possible racial overtones.
However, the three accused told a TV station they are not racists and claim Phillips started the incident by tossing a hamburger at them, but Phillips denies he did anything to set off the fight.
Police said they are still investigating, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
