CBC News has learned the 15-year-old Surrey, B.C., teen killed in a crash Monday night is Sanjeeve Sharma.

The16-year-old male driver of the vehicle in which Sharma was travelling is under investigation by Surrey RCMP for possible drinking and driving.

Police say that some time after 9 p.m. PT Monday, the driver lost control of a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu on 128th Street near 82nd Avenue, side-swiping a red BMW SUV before slamming into a lamp pole.

Other than Sharma, who was killed in the collision, there were two other passengers in the vehicle. They and the driver suffered "relatively minor" injuries, police said.

Sharma attended Princess Margaret Secondary School, and in a Facebook group called "R.I.P. Sanjeeve Sharma, you will be missed," students at the school were sharing their memories of their classmate.

Kaitlyn B. Morrison, wrote, "I can't even believe you're actually gone. Your smile could light up a whole room, you're going to be missed by all."

A candlelight vigil was planned for Tuesday evening at 9 p.m. PT at Newton Elementary School.

Witnesses said the Chevy Malibu was speeding before it veered out of control. Investigators confirmed alcohol and speed are suspected as factors in the crash but said charges have not been laid.

"We are investigating the involvement of alcohol in the collision," said RCMP Sgt. Phil Hasenpflug.

Names of the passengers have not been released.

A second collision almost happened at the scene later, when another vehicle driving erratically sped by, nearly hitting an officer. The driver of that vehicle was pulled over, and police said charges of driving under the influence are pending.
